The Top 5 problems associated to the presence of labels on boxes, pallets and RPC’s

Over the years many customers from different sectors of the food processing have approached us to share their concerns about the presence of labels on their plastic boxes, as well as on pallets and other containers. In this article, we collect the most common concerns and share them with you, in case they can be useful.

  1. False identifications. This is one of the most serious problems when it occurs, because it generates uncertainty in the system. There have been cases (we remember a notorious one) of companies in which all the alarms have gone off because the system reads an expired date code inside the refrigerated room. This activates a protocol that paralyzes all shipments.  After several analyzes, it is discovered that the warning has occurred because the plastic box containing the product had an old label, and the automatic detector had read it, but that the batch was not expired.
  2. Sensors clogged. Some of the labels that have not been removed in a controlled way, are detached. It is common to end up obstructing sensors, causing false detections that affect the production flows.
  3. Occupied space. The remaining label takes up the space of the new one. At this moment 3 situations can be generated: if the placement of labels is manual, the person who puts the labels will either look for a new location in the same box, so that we have 2 zones with labels. Then we will ask ourselves which one is the good label... If there are two we have a 50% chance of getting it right... If there are 4, 5 or 6, knowing which label identifies the product is more like a casino gambling than a production process. Or the operator will need some time to remove the old one and place the new one, wasting time and fluidity. In case of automatic placement, the second label will be located just above the first. We have come to find boxes that accumulated up to 5 labels superimposed on each other... until they all fall (including the last one).
  4. Hygiene. Labels, papers, plastics, which if not eliminated in a controlled manner, enter our production centers with the risk of falling anywhere. But even without falling, the labels and remains of them, stuck to the walls of the boxes and containers, are a perfect anchor point for contaminants.
  5. Image. Increasingly, companies are using returnable boxes as containers to deliver their products to the customers. Delivering the products inside a clean container is a sign of quality and speaks of the care we have in the details.

Have you also suffered any of these problems? Have you had other problems with labels?
